Thanks for accepting me into the Club505. My son and I are currently restoring back to roadworthy condition two 505 GTI Estates that belong to my father who turned 90 this last May. The 1998 Blue car is roadworthy and we have now started to work on the Champagne 1987 car. Hopefully we can get a lot of information from the forum. We have also 2 306 GTI6 one Diablo and one silver and my son has a 405 LeMan that is now in for a full back to bare metal respray.

Our Blue car is in a good condition but will need some attention with the paint and some rust needs to be addressed around the wheel arches. We have fitted new parts to the braking system including wheel cylinders. In the coming years we will hopefully remove the engine to give it an overhaul and general clean up. We do our own sandblasting and powder coating of small parts including the cam cover and engine brackets, just to keep them looking nicer pictures below are of some of our powder coated parts before and after

Our Champagne coloured car is in need of far more care, we have taken the fuel tank out and cleaned it thoroughly and checked the sender and pump, which appeared to be in good working order and the pump in tank works well, we have also replaced the external pump and filter. As the engine has not started for over 20 years we are making sure we check as much as we can as we go. New timing belt and water pump have been fitted as well as a new carbon brush for the fan, The starter motor turns the engine strongly so we are hoping that after checking all the wiring and parts she may fire up and run. The radiator is not good so we have found a replacement that may work but is different to the current one, we will make it fit!!! Timing belt cover ready for coating and engine picture. Once we are sure the car is viable to start we will do a proper job on it with a full engine out to check for rust in the engine bay. [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir cette image]

you are welcome between us, it's awesome to see the 505 in the whole of the world, but with the right steering wheel I think you will face problems to find some interior parts if you need it.

An update on our Champagne car. We have the engine running once again after it has sat for 22 years. New timing belt, spark plugs and oil. The MAF was very dirty so we have cleaned it inside and out, which improved the running. We do need to sort out the idle speed now but we are happy with the progress and will now start to get the braking system sorted out with new Pads Discs and full rear drum shoe replacement.

It is the Mass Air Flow sensor flap of the Bosch Jetronic system. It is the black topped box on the left of the picture uploaded. It measures the air flow from the Air filter box before the throttle body.

Does anybody know where the wiper for the MAF should sit when the car is idling, I think it is to far around the segment and should be lower. Any help would be appreciated. Picture attached and one of the car once polished

Was it factory sealed before you opened ? You are not supposed to open it ! What is important is not the position of the pin inside at idle, what is important is the force curve to open it up to max.
Do you mean your idle is too high ? What is it ? Mine remains high for a long time. around 1400 at cold start and goes down to 900 when warm.
Check your water temp resisitance, at the water temp tself and then at the calculator's pin. If you see difference you may have a harness issue that you can fix by using a new wire.

Hi, Thanks for posting. Firstly it had been opened before, but not by me. I understand from other users of this device that some issues are when the carbon track is dirty, I cleaned the track with isopropyl alcohol and it made a big difference but in other forums I noticed that the position was further back than mine. It now idles fine at 1000 rpm but does not drop down from that. We are pleased as the engine had not been started for over 20 years so some issues are to be expected.

Another bit of progress to report. Wheels are now refurbished and will look fantastic on the car when we finally get the brakes fitted. We have found that the fuel return pipe has corroded through and will need to be replaced, the joys of car renovation.

Today I have ordered tyres for the refurbished wheels, we have stripped down the brake calipers and blasted them and powder coated them. Fully rebuild with new seals, looking really nice now. The brake shields are I believe no longer available so we sand blasted them too and powder coated them. Have remade the fuel pipe that was corroded and will be fitting it when we have finished the brake system.
